Understanding Blood Pressure Readings

How to Read Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is recorded as two numbers, for example 120/80 mmHg:

  • Systolic pressure (120): The pressure when your heart beats and pushes blood through your arteries
  • Diastolic pressure (80): The pressure when your heart rests between beats

What Affects Blood Pressure?

  • Time of day (usually lower in the morning)
  • Physical activity and stress levels
  • Food and drink consumption
  • Medications and supplements
  • Temperature and environment
  • Bladder fullness

When to Measure

For the most accurate readings:

  • Measure at the same time each day
  • Avoid caffeine, exercise, and smoking for 30 minutes before
  • Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring
  • Use the toilet before measuring
  • Take multiple readings and record the average
